Social Studies and Global Education is located in the School of Teaching and Learning (T&L) in the College of Education and Human Ecology.
What Makes SSGE Unique?
We prepare our students to learn and teach about the world from global perspectives. Based on content from education, history and the social sciences, we infuse global dimensions into our courses and provide cross-cultural field experiences and study tours. We use electronic technologies to connect our students to people, resources and issues across the planet.
What is available?
Our MEd is for people who want to become secondary (grades 7-12) social studies teachers. It allows students to gain a Master’s degree and Ohio licensure in one year of course work.
Our MA focus is on curriculum and pedagogy in social studies and global education. It combines core courses in social studies and global education with electives selected by the student.
We also have a Dual Degree MA with the Department of African American and African Studies.
Our PhD area of study is designed for those who wish to become professors, curriculum supervisors, researchers or educational leaders in social studies and global education.

General Admissions Criteria
As specified by the Graduate School of The Ohio State University, admissions criteria are as follows:
- An earned baccalaureate or professional degree from an accredited college or university by the expected date of entry.
- A minimum of 3.00 GPA for undergraduate coursework.
- GREs, preferably above 500 in quantitative and verbal, although scores below 500 may be acceptable if other materials are very strong.
- A minimum score of 550 on the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) is required when an applicant is from a country where the native language is not English, unless a bachelor’s degree or its equivalent or higher was earned in a country where English is the native language.
- Quality of writing as evidenced in a statement of intent.
- Three letters of recommendation, preferably from professors.
In admissions preference is given to applicants with extensive cross-cultural or international experiences, degrees in history, the social sciences, or interdisciplinary international studies (such as African Studies or Women in Development), and teaching experience in social studies education.
