 Purpose:

This course is designed to be a practical coaching
experience where application of concepts within a specific coaching situation
are highlighted using tasks, activities, and meetings coordinated by staff
mentoring.  The focus of the course
is to guide the novice sport leader to develop insights and competencies in the
areas of specific sport content knowledge and application as well as philosophy,
psychology, pedagogy, physiology, and risk management.

 Expectations:

Students are expected to attend all contracted practices,
games, and special team gatherings, and complete all assigned tasks in a
thorough and timely manner.  The
expectation is that all students will behave professionally within the context
of the course.  The student is
expected to attend scheduled meeting with OSU supervisor, submit contract and
weekly summaries on time, and be prepared with a written report and oral
presentation at the end of the practicum experience.  If any time conflicts arise, the student is responsible for contacting
the OSU supervisor to discuss individual arrangements.  Students will be expected to
establish and maintain and email account to facilitate communicate with the OSU
supervisor.
  Academic
conduct is governed by Chapter 335-25 in the Code of Student Conduct and
misconduct will be handled according to university policy and procedure.

 Requirements:

1.  Secure a placement according to the guidelines specified in the Coaching
Strand Student Handbook.

 2.  Submit all required forms for enrollment including placement request and
agency acceptance form in the quarter prior to enrollment (10 pts.).

 3.  Attend initial meeting with OSU supervisor during the first two weeks of
the quarter to clarify and answer questions concerning course requirement and
expectations (5 pts.).

 4.  Meet with site supervisor during first two weeks of quarter.  Develop a contract based on this meeting. (20 pts.) The contract should
include:

·  A description of the specific coaching situation—sport, site,
supervisor, number and ages of athletes in the program, times of practices and
games, your weekly involvement time.

·  A list of responsibilities in the areas of:  team administration (e.g. equipment, event management, transportation);
practices; teaching; game responsibilities; meetings/planning.

·  Personal and team goals

·  Signatures of site supervisor, student, university supervisor

5.  Document each coaching session with a daily log.  From these logs, a weekly summary must be typed and submitted to the OSU
supervisor via email or hard copy by Tuesday of the following week.  One point will be deducted for each day late.  (There are six summaries due within the course of the internship. Each
one is worth 5 pts. for a total of 30 pts.)  The weekly summaries should be approximately 2-3 pages long and should
include your reflections about:

·  What you learned that week relative to coaching

·  Questions you may have had concerning decision of the site
supervisor

·  Observations of athlete or team progress relative to goals

·  Observations of or ideas for effective management or motivation

·  Communication concerns involving players, parents, or other
coaches

·  Any other reactions relative to the coaching experience

 6.  Attend mid-term meeting with OSU supervisor to discuss progress (5 pts.).

 7.  Complete a final written report and make an oral presentation to OSU
supervisor and other students enrolled in 489.05.  Business
attire is appropriate for the presentations  (15 pts. each).  See the

 8. Send a thank you letter to
your site supervisor.  You may want
to request a recommendation from your site supervisor for your files.
