The public lecture is a highlight of the conference and is free, open to the public. The 2009 lecture, A Perfect Storm: Serving Wounded Warriors With Disabilities, will be presented by Paul D. Grossman, JD, Adjunct Instructor, Hastings College of Law and Mary Lee Vance Ph.D., University of Wisconsin Superior and including short remarks from David M. Booth, Trial Attorney, Disability Rights Section, Civil Rights Division, US Department of Justice & L. Scott Lissner, ADA Coordinator, The Ohio State University. Following the lecture there will be a community reception at the Urban Arts Space featuring accessible tours of the MFA Thesis Exhibition and a welcome by Berkeley University lecturer, author and disability studies scholar Georgina Kleege. “It’s Our Story” is an inside view of the reality of life with a disability. An oral history project that speaks directly from the voices of those who know what it’s like, directly to those who want to know how it is. The over 500 narratives contained within the digital archive has the power to change the way the world sees disability, and the way the disability community sees itself. The Story Flag will be on public display in the Blackwell Hotel Ballroom Lobby on April 28th and 29, 2009 during the Multiple Perspectives Conference. This Exhibit is free and open to the public. City of Upper Arlington Parks & Recreation Saturday Therapeutic Recreation Program Needs Volunteers
OSU Volunteer Experience
Saturdays 10:45 am – 2:30 pm
Students looking for experience working with individuals who have a developmental and/or physical disability may do so through the City of Upper Arlington Parks and Recreation Department’s Saturday Therapeutic Recreation Program. Students will be able to gain valuable experience and insight working with this program.
The Saturday Therapeutic Recreation Program will be held April 4 through May 16, no program April 11, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Upper Arlington Senior Center (adjacent to West Campus), 1945 Ridgeview Road (43221), Building #2. New volunteer orientation is held from 10:15 – 11 a.m. and students need only to attend this once. Volunteers are welcome to assist 1, 2 or more weeks.
We start the program with warm-up exercises then it’s on to wild and crazy group games. We break for lunch, so come hungry. Then we have music and dance activities, even if you have two left feet. We make an art project that’s so cool you’ll want to make one for yourself. Then we finish with sport skills.
Our participants are more responsive when they have a buddy to work with. So come on out and lend a hand. There are plenty of smiles to go around.
We would like to go to the zoo on April 25 (we pay your way and you can even go back later that day) from 9 am – 12 pm (Volunteer Time 8:30 am –12:15 p.m.) But we must have 8 volunteers to go on the trip. And then we go to Fancyburg Park on May 9 (short drive from senior center) same times as zoo.
So sign-up now!! If you are interested contact Ginny Houghton at work 583-5302, at home 740-363-1075 (not a long distance call from Cols) or e-mail: ghoughton@uaoh.net. Ginny is out of the office on Friday after 11 am or contact director Frankie Collins: collins.687@osu.edu.
To get to the Upper Arlington Senior Center (1945 Ridgeview Road, 43221) go west on Lane Ave. and go pass the traffic lights at Kenny Rd., North Star Rd., Lane Ave. Shopping Center (two lights) then turn right onto Northwest Blvd. At the second traffic light turn left onto Ridgeview Road. Go past the park and turn left into the parking lot with three annex buildings (the back of Tremont Elementary School) and we’ll be in building #2.
The telephone number to reach us in case you get lost is 425-4370. Hope to see you there.

Chicago Olympic Bid
Some of you may already know, but for those of you who don’t, Chicago is in the running to host the Olympics in 2016. These next few months are crucial to gain support and promote Chicago 2016, so the committee has made efforts to reach out to college campuses. I am a Students Support Chicago 2016 Leader for OSU and am looking to form a team of dedicated volunteers to do various things around campus and get people to support the Chicago Olympic bid. For example, we will be starting out with booths in the RPAC, the ARC, and each J.O. to give out flyers and have people sign up to “support the bid.” This is a great way to be a part of a big and effective organization and a unique thing to put on your resume. Also, there is going to be a need for certain skills, like video-taping and putting together a short movie, or designing flyers and logos, so if anyone is at all interested please contact me! Creative minds and new ideas are welcome!
It would be AWESOME if you could all take two seconds to support the bid online! Here is the link:

No Place for Hate Volunteers Needed
Hello!I hope everyone had a wonderful spring break!
I am a 3rd year student here at the Ohio State University. Currently, I am one of about 30 students working with a group called No Place for Hate. No Place for Hate’s goal is to create more harmonious communities, classrooms, and workplaces by combating bias and increasing an appreciation for the richness that diversity brings to all communities. I am personally working with about 10 other individuals within the group that is specifically focusing on the ‘ableism.’ Each of us has a passion and enthusiasm for increasing tolerance and understanding of individuals with special needs and/or disabilities by teaching others to focus on each person’s abilities, and not an individual’s disability.
On Sunday, April 26th, my group and I are planning an event to cap off April (national Disability Awareness Month) here on campus at Jesse Owens North to raise awareness for disabilities. We are planning to have speakers and organizations from around the community come to help us raise awareness. We are in the process of trying to arrange for a wheelchair basketball team to come to our event as well to speak, demonstrate, and hopefully play with attendees.
WE NEED HELP!!!!! This is a great way to get involved this quarter! If anyone is interested, is part of a group, or knows of a group that would be interested in participating in this event–whether it be in co-planning, volunteering the day of, or having a speaker/representative at the even, PLEASE LET ME KNOW!!! My group’s next meeting is TUESDAY, MAY 31st at 6:30pm at Hillel if anyone is interested in getting involved right away.
Feel free to contact me by e-mail (
lee.2877@osu.edu) or by phone (847 212 8763).Thanks so much!
Sincerely,
Nicole Lee
