City of Upper Arlington Parks & Recreation Saturday Therapeutic Recreation Program Needs Volunteers

OSU Volunteer Experience

Saturdays 10:45 am – 2:30 pm

Students looking for experience working with individuals who have a developmental and/or physical disability may do so through the City of Upper Arlington Parks and Recreation Department’s Saturday Therapeutic Recreation Program.  Students will be able to gain valuable experience and insight working with this program.

The Saturday Therapeutic Recreation Program will be held April 4 through May 16, no program April 11, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Upper Arlington Senior Center (adjacent to West Campus), 1945 Ridgeview Road (43221), Building #2.  New volunteer orientation is held from 10:15 – 11 a.m. and students need only to attend this once.  Volunteers are welcome to assist 1, 2 or more weeks.

We start the program with warm-up exercises then it’s on to wild and crazy group games. We break for lunch, so come hungry. Then we have music and dance activities, even if you have two left feet.  We make an art project that’s so cool you’ll want to make one for yourself. Then we finish with sport skills.

Our participants are more responsive when they have a buddy to work with.  So come on out and lend a hand.  There are plenty of smiles to go around.

We would like to go to the zoo on April 25 (we pay your way and you can even go back later that day) from 9 am – 12 pm (Volunteer Time 8:30 am –12:15 p.m.)  But we must have 8 volunteers to go on the trip.  And then we go to Fancyburg Park on May 9 (short drive from senior center) same times as zoo.

So sign-up now!!  If you are interested contact Ginny Houghton at work 583-5302, at home 740-363-1075 (not a long distance call from Cols) or e-mail: ghoughton@uaoh.net.  Ginny is out of the office on Friday after 11 am or contact director Frankie Collins: collins.687@osu.edu.

To get to the Upper Arlington Senior Center (1945 Ridgeview Road, 43221) go west on Lane Ave. and go pass the traffic lights at Kenny Rd., North Star Rd., Lane Ave. Shopping Center (two lights) then turn right onto Northwest Blvd.   At the second traffic light turn left onto Ridgeview Road.  Go past the park and turn left into the parking lot with three annex buildings (the back of Tremont Elementary School) and we’ll be in building #2.

The telephone number to reach us in case you get lost is 425-4370.  Hope to see you there.

Chicago Olympic Bid

Some of you may already know, but for those of you who don’t, Chicago is in the running to host the Olympics in 2016.  These next few months are crucial to gain support and promote Chicago 2016, so the committee has made efforts to reach out to college campuses.  I am a Students Support Chicago 2016 Leader for OSU and am looking to form a team of dedicated volunteers to do various things around campus and get people to support the Chicago Olympic bid.  For example, we will be starting out with booths in the RPAC, the ARC, and each J.O. to give out flyers and have people sign up to “support the bid.”  This is a great way to be a part of a big and effective organization and a unique thing to put on your resume.  Also, there is going to be a need for certain skills, like video-taping and putting together a short movie, or designing flyers and logos, so if anyone is at all interested please contact me!  Creative minds and new ideas are welcome!

It would be AWESOME if you could all take two seconds to support the bid online!  Here is the link:

No Place for Hate Volunteers Needed

Hello!I hope everyone had a wonderful spring break!

I am a 3rd year student here at the Ohio State University.  Currently, I am one of about 30 students working with a group called No Place for Hate. No Place for Hate’s goal is to create more harmonious communities, classrooms, and workplaces by combating bias and increasing an appreciation for the richness that diversity brings to all communities. I am personally working with about 10 other individuals within the group that is specifically focusing on the ‘ableism.’ Each of us has a passion and enthusiasm for increasing tolerance and understanding of individuals with special needs and/or disabilities by teaching others to focus on each person’s abilities, and not an individual’s disability.

On Sunday, April 26th, my group and I are planning an event to cap off April (national Disability Awareness Month) here on campus at Jesse Owens North to raise awareness for disabilities.  We are planning to have speakers and organizations from around the community come to help us raise awareness.  We are in the process of trying to arrange for a wheelchair basketball team to come to our event as well to speak, demonstrate, and hopefully play with attendees.

WE NEED HELP!!!!!  This is a great way to get involved this quarter! If anyone is interested, is part of a group, or knows of a group that would be interested in participating in this event–whether it be in co-planning, volunteering the day of, or having a speaker/representative at the even, PLEASE LET ME KNOW!!! My group’s next meeting is TUESDAY, MAY 31st at 6:30pm at Hillel if anyone is interested in getting involved right away.

Feel free to contact me by e-mail (

lee.2877@osu.edu) or by phone (847 212 8763).Thanks so much!

Sincerely,
Nicole Lee

Upcoming Courses

EDU PAES 380 & 381: Exercise
Physiology and Sport Performance SU09

EDU PAES 380 & 381 has been approved to be
offered Summer 2009.

First Education Experience Program
(FEEP): EDU PAES 271 w/289

• What is FEEP? FEEP is a career
exploration program designed for students interested in a career in
education. The program will help you understand if a career in
education is a good choice for you. FEEP is a required
pre-requisite to apply for the Special Education major.

• What careers can I explore?

Students explore a variety of roles in FEEP,
such as being a teacher, school counselor, principal, school
psychologist, school nurse, or any other type of professional
educator.

• If I register for FEEP, what does it
require?

FEEP is an 8 credit hour class that will
expose you to the educational career of your choice. You will spend
4 days a week (for a total of 12 hours/week) with a school
professional and 1 day a week in a seminar class.

• How do I register?

Registration for FEEP is held over the course
of 3 weeks every quarter and takes each student approximately 15
minutes to complete. We register students a quarter in advance, so
for example, students will register in the Autumn for participation
in the Winter. All students must register through the FEEP program
to obtain the call numbers in order to register online. Students
may register in 1 of 2 ways:

o Option 1: The FEEP staff will set up tables
for 2 2-hour windows every quarter—once in the Hale Center
and once in Arps Hall. Students may come to the table at any time
during the 2-hour window and register in person. Students may also
ask the FEEP staff questions at this time.

o Option 2: Students may download and print a
registration form off of the FEEP website
(http://ehe.osu.edu/paes/feep/default.htm) and fill the form out
completely. After completing the registration form, students can
drop it off in the FEEP mailbox in room A426 of the PAES Building
(305 W. 17th Ave.) during normal business hours. When the form is
received by the FEEP staff, they will email the necessary course
codes and information to each student to register online and
prepare for the quarter. Applications submitted after the open
registration deadline will be applied to enrollment for the
following quarter.

o Option 3: Submit your registration form
online from the FEEP website
(http://ehe.osu.edu/paes/feep/default.htm). When your form has been
received by the FEEP staff, you will be emailed the necessary
course codes and other pertinent information that will enable you
to prepare for the quarter. Applications submitted after the open
registration deadline will be applied to enrollment for the
following quarter.

The Race For Number One: The Good,
The Bad, And The Ugly Of A Division I (Fbs) Postseason
2 Course Description

Historically, the nature of
public discourse surfaces as a significant topic and recent
discussion about the pairings for several Bowl Championship Series
(BCS) games represents one example for us to study public
discourse. The BCS often provokes passionate arguments about the
appropriateness of the current postseason format for Division IA
college football. Several scholars and popular writers suggest the
current system serves to oppress low and mid-major conference so
they cannot enjoy the “spoils” provided by the holiday
season. On the other hand, numerous others promote the bowl
tradition as important characteristic of Americana and mutually
beneficial (i.e. socially and financially) host communities and
participating institutions. Several fans, coaches, and higher
education administrators support a college football playoff,
however, resistance to change remains strong. The purpose of this
course is to provide an overview of the problems, advantages, and
other issues concerning the various methods offered

Change, Challenge, & Collaboration

April 28 and 29, 2009

Student Poster Session Tuesday, April
28th 2009

The Ohio State University Columbus Campus

This year’s theme “Change,
Challenge & Collaboration” reflects the critical place in
history we occupy.  Since the last conference the United
Nations has adopted the Convention on Disability; Congress passed
the ADA Amendments Act, a new GI bill with significant support for
disabled veterans and the Higher Education Opportunity Act which
includes significant provisions on disability; the Access Board is
proposing changes in Section 508, and the Department of Justice is
in the final stages of a comprehensive review and update of the
regulations for the ADA’s Titles II and III.

Graduate and undergraduate posters are being
solicited to represent the broad interdisciplinary approaches to
disability at the undergraduate and graduate level.
Submissions may be based on :

·         Class
Projects & Papers

·
Independent & Supervised Student Research

·         Community
Service & Applied Problem Solving from Service Learning Classes
or student organizations

·         Art &
Performance

Our custom is to offer a number of quotes to
assist you in describing your work from a fresh perspective

·
“Disability Studies should serve as an access ramp between
the disability community and research
universities.”   Paul K. Longmore

·         “For
every complex problem, there is a solution that is simple, neat,
and wrong.”  H.L.  Mencken

·         “Congress
acknowledged that society’s accumulated myths and fears about
disability and disease are as handicapping as are the physical
limitations that flow from actual impairment.”
Justice William J. Brennan

·
“Continue to surprise those who would put you in a neat
demographic. Be insistently curious.”   Gordon
Gee

Posters can take a variety of forms:

Print material mounted on poster board or
display panels or arranged on a table

PowerPoint, web page or video presentation
from laptop (10 minute maximum length)

Presentation materials must fit on a
3’x6’ table or along 6’ or less of wall space

Presenters must provide their own
equipment

Visit these sites for information on how to
present at a poster session:

Students and teams of students who wish to
present a poster display of their project must send the following
information to ADA-OSU@osu.edu no later than March 30, 2009.

Title

Short Title - 12 word maximum

Description of their proposed poster –
150 word maximum

E-mail address, phone number, and surface mail
address of coordinating presenter

As appropriate, university, department, grant,
course or student organization affiliation

A letter of support from a faculty member or
