The overall mission of the Ohio State University Campus Suicide Prevention Program is to develop a comprehensive, effective, culturally responsive, and sustainable system of suicide prevention for students at The Ohio State University. The program will employ consistent and coordinated activities in all of the social spheres in which OSU college students live, study, work, and play. The program links both the academic and services sides of the University and engages more than 30 campus and community partners. All program activities will inform the creation of the OSU Comprehensive Suicide Prevention Plan.
Goals
- Engage a broad and diverse group of participants representing relevant campus and community partners, to oversee, coordinate and implement a comprehensive suicide prevention program, including screening, education, crisis management, policy development, and outreach activities;
- Perform wide-ranging surveillance of suicide risk and response on the OSU campus;
- Develop an extensive gatekeepers training system based on emerging best practices that increases knowledge of suicide risk factors, imminent warning signs, prevention strategies, referral resources, and protective mechanisms;
- Expand suicide prevention education and programming to all students to increase knowledge of suicide risk factors, imminent warning signs, prevention strategies, referral resources, and protective mechanisms;
- Increase help-seeking and decrease stigma among students;
- Develop a comprehensive Suicide Prevention Plan for The Ohio State University;
- Evaluate all components of the OSU campus Suicide Prevention Program and disseminate outcome measurements to appropriate audiences.
