Doctoral students Mel Butler and Sibyl Cato were accepted into the highly competitive OSU Preparing Future Faculty program. Congratulations to both of these outstanding students!

Thank you to all of the students, alumni, and individuals from the community who participated in the annual Chi Sigma Iota Professional Development Day on Saturday, March 1st. It was a successful event, thanks to the hard work of the Chi Sigma Iota officers who worked so hard to organize the day.

Congratulations to two Counselor Education students who participated (and completed!) the Columbus Marathon! Maria Elliott ran the half marathon in 2 hours, 7 minutes. Emily Coen completed the full 26.2 miles. Click here for a picture of Emily as she crossed the finish line.

Congratulation to four school counseling students who were selected to receive a Franklin County Arlene Walker Youth Empowerment mini grant. Each proposal was written in collaboration with a student from the individual internship sites. Students and interns will be recognized at a luncheon on October 25th sponsored by the Prevention Council of Central Ohio. Recipients of these awards are:
Laura Begue for her proposal to provide academic, social and parenting programming support to pregnant and parenting teens; Carly Dennis for her proposal to establish a peer mentor program to assist new students with mid year school transition; Lisa Newman for her proposal to fund “Busta Ryme” a group for students to develop their writing skills and perform their work through “slam poetry”; Rachel Zufall for her proposal to fund “Speak Loud, Stand Proud” an open mike night for students to display their self expression through artwork, photography, rap, poetry and dance.

The Out of the Darkness Community Walk to fight depression and suicide was a huge success. Thank you to 21 counselor education students and their friends and family who joined the Campus Suicide Prevention Team. By the day of the walk, counselor education had already raised $1745, which more pledges on the way.

Thanks to our students who volunteered with the Mental Health America of Franklin County Children’s Mental Health Conference, which was held on September 26, 2007. Volunteers were:

Nikol Bowen
Emily Clark
Emily Coen
Carly Dennis
Shannon Peltier

Thanks to our volunteers for the Mental Health Screenings at NBC-4 Expo in October. Mental Health America was able to screen 125 individuals over the two-day event, with the help of 27 volunteers – many of them students in the OSU Counselor Education program!

Congratulations to Ann Raffay, who completed a 60 mile walk for Breast Cancer on August 17-19.

ColumbusReads presented Dollie Curry, Physical Activity and Educational Services, with a 10th Year Anniversary Silver Plaque in recognition of her decade of service to the program to help Columbus Public Schools kindergartners learn to read.
